Food security refers to the availability of food and one's access to it. A household is considered food secure when its occupants do not live in hunger or fear of starvation. We realize food security depends not only on the amount of food available, but also on its nutritional value. A diet dominated by starch, for example, will prevent starvation, but it can also lead to severe malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies.
CSRL is helping farmers achieve food security through nutrition education and the introduction of better farming techniques. CSRL uses Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation (PM&E) methods to learn how farmers participating in CSRL activities are progressing in relation to program objectives. Kitchen gardens help diversifty household diets.
